On recommendation from a new friend we changed our plans to include Verona, and we are so glad we did. As a fluke the city held a Robert Capa exhibition which was displayed underground amoungst ruins of the city from the first century. The Colosseum was the third largest in the country so we came back the next day to go inside and see the theatre. Overall it was a youthful, busy town where we had the best risotto, ravioli and gnocchi of our lives, it was filled with couples and love graffiti on every wall thanks to it being the setting of Romeo and Juliet (whose hypothetical house we actually visited).
